Preparing for an Emergency: Where do I start?

As many of us know—and may have personally experienced—this December, dangerously high winds left large parts of Boulder County and the surrounding suburbs without power, in some areas for days. Those of you elsewhere in the country have other severe weather events to contend with.

After moments like this, whether it’s a fire, a flood, or a storm, I always have questions: Should I finally build an emergency kit? If so, what do I include? Should I make a plan in case of an emergency/disaster? What do I need to consider for an emergency/disaster plan?

If you also have any of these same questions, I’ve included two resources below, prepared by Boulder County’s Disaster Management, to help simplify the process.

The first page includes a straightforward checklist that goes over a few important points to discuss when creating an emergency/disaster plan. The second page lists out different items to consider when building your own emergency kit. With these suggestions in mind, don’t forget to make it your own!
